History of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 with a mission to reintroduce rhinos in Uganda after they were wiped out during the civil war in the 1980s. The sanctuary started with six southern white rhinos from Kenya and has since grown to over 30 rhinos.

The sanctuary’s management has partnered with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Rhino Fund Uganda, and the Ziwa community to ensure the rhinos are protected and well taken care of. The sanctuary has a strict security protocol, and all visitors are accompanied by armed rangers during their visit.

What to Expect on Your Visit

Visitors to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary can participate in guided walking tours to see the rhinos up close. The tours are led by experienced rangers who provide information about the rhinos and their habitat. The walking tour takes about 1-2 hours and is a great opportunity to learn about the conservation efforts of the sanctuary.

Aside from the rhinos, visitors can also spot other wildlife, such as antelopes, monkeys, and various bird species. The sanctuary has several picnic areas, making it an excellent spot for a family outing or a romantic getaway.

How to Get to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located approximately 176 kilometers from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. Visitors can either drive or take a public transport bus to Nakasongola town and then take a taxi or a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) to the sanctuary.
